Hi AVALON Applicants!!


The application procedure for AVALON has been updated and reinforced since Oct. 2012. Please read carefully below if you're interested in applying and email the 'essay' and 'teaching sample video' to PATRICK LEE (  ASAP!  The number of positions are very limited for Nov.~ Dec. 2012 so better to be hurry!!

1. The teacher must pass the initial screening/interview with HR

2. Submit questionnaire form, essay and teaching sample video (see attachments)

3. Pass 2nd interview with campus director or head teacher IF they request it.

Please choose the grade level you see yourselves as a good fit with (Elementary or Middle School level) and you can refer with either the Jump Speaking lesson or TOEFLibt lesson PDF file) What AVALON is looking for is for the you to be able to clearly explain the directions as well as as execute the lesson in an engaging and fun way. The video can be anywhere from 5-10 minutes and uploaded to YouTube.

Please select one of the topics below and write a standard five-paragraph essay (two pages double-spaced, 500 word limit) answering the question or discussing the posed topic.  Reprint the essay topic as the title and include your name and date on each page. Formal citations are not necessary, but please back up your argument with evidence and analysis.


1.     Is torture ever justified? Under what circumstances and why?


2.     Discuss the following quotation based on your experience and/or observation, "We would be ashamed of our finest acts if the world were aware of the motives behind them."  Rochefoucault


3.     Do you think our growing dependence on high technology hurts us or makes us stronger?  What are the major advantages/disadvantages of this dependence?


4.     Why are people often unwilling to intervene in or report crimes that they observe? Explain.


5.     What is the cultural relevance of a particular television show, movie, song, or novel produced within the past 20 years?  How is it important to your country?


6.     Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.” Use relevant reasons and/ or examples to support your views.


7.     The Korean president Lee Myung-bak recently suggested, to a skeptical public, that classes other than EFL be taught in English. What additional measures could be implemented in both public and private schools to help students more readily acquire English proficiency? Use relevant reasons and/or examples to support your views.


8.     Experts agree that globalization has been accelerating at an increasingly rapid rate since the early 1970s. Discuss three of the main benefits or costs associated with increased economic, social and cultural ties between nations.

9.     In Korea, English is seen as a skill necessary for upward mobility. As a result, the number of private English language institutes has exploded. What are the costs and benefits of approaching EFL as a socioeconomic imperative?


10.   Robert Frost said, "We come to college to get over our “little- mindedness." Discuss in relation to your own experiences.
